Worth the experiment, but . . .
I fell in love with salmon caviar (ikura) when I lived in Japan and usually treat myself to some at the holidays; however, my usual supplier was out so I ordered this. To be honest, it wasn't clear to me that it would come in a tin--as far as I could tell, some quantities did and some did not, so I took my chances. Mine arrived in a tin, which was a beast to open the first time. The topmost eggs were a wee bit dry, and overall there's that slight undertaste of can that seems detectable in a number of food and drinks. But I got my year-end ikura, so it wasn't a total loss. Additionally, ordering from Caviar Star led me to try some of their other products, some of which were truly blissful, so now I have alternatives with which to indulge myself.

WOW - My new go-to salmon roe website
I used to buy my roe from vitalchoice but they've been totally sold out recently. I found this site while looking for an alternative website that sells sustainably sourced salmon roe packaged without any preservatives.
I have to say I am blown away by the quality! They arrived quickly, super fresh and plump. This is hands down the best salmon roe I've ever had delivered to my home. Even my boyfriend, who eats roe but isn't crazy about it, commented on how good the quality was.

I've used it to top smoked salmon on toast points, with creme fraiche appetizers, and I've also made sushi with it !

Unfortunately...the standard shipping option is too slow for the ice to remain frozen....hence....the caviar arrived Not Cold ..almost warm !!
I immediately tossed them in the freezer for 20 minutes, then,...as per instructions, placed them in the bottom of the fridge !
They seemed to have survived, but there has to be a better way to keep this precious and perishable item cold !
I wish they could find a way to keep the gel-paks frozen longer, especially for their spring and summer 3-4 day journey !

Very Good, Slightly Overpriced
Very good salmon roe, with a cleaner flavor than some others I've had. Straight out of the tin worked very nicely in a number of applications. Also took well to a brief secondary cure (15-20 minutes) in a soy/mirin/dashi mixture for use in a Japanese dish.
This is priced about 40% higher than comparable salmon roes I've purchased elsewhere, which is why I'm deducting one star.
